what do you expect the nra to say today? >> yeah, i don't think we know what they're going to say, and i don't think it's the right thing to kind of just speculate. i think we should talk about what we do know, which is that the overwhelming majority of americans, including the overwhelming majority of gun owners and nra members support sensible restrictions. you know, you just showed a poll that said the number of americans that support strict gun control, that's not the conversation. the conversation is around specific measures like criminal background checks on all gun sales. 74% of nra members support criminal background checks on all gun sales and our message today is really to them, to the nra members, you know, like president obama said, nra members are mothers and fathers, too, and we all grieve over this terrible tragedy and we all grieve over the 32 to 34 murders that happen every single day in our country, and there are things we can do about it and that's what we hope the nra is going to focus on as well, but it'

the nra became the nra as we know it today by being very savvy about its politics. and the simple truth is, even if there is a national movement right now in favor of doing something, everyone in washington knows that there is a long time between now and when such a law that actually will be considered. and during that time, a lot of the public sentiment can die down and more importantly the nra can work not just the national level, but the tremendous influence at the state and local level. all these congress members, all these senators, they do not run as national politicians. they run in a state or in a district. and what matters to them is how the people feel in their state or district. and what is driving these polls up right now, in large part, is a really tremendous outpouring of sentiment from, yes, some moderates in the middle, but also tremendously by people who already live in largely democratic areas, places that already favor more gun control. that probably makes very little difference to a lawmaker who comes from a state that does not feel that way, bro

do you think the nra's solution of arming these schools would be helpful? >> well, i don't think you could do it, suzanne. i think as a practical matter it's just not doable. first of all, you have 100,000 schools in this country. here where i am at virginia tech i'm 100 yards from where my other daughter was when the first shooting happened five and a half years ago and it was right down the hall and her dorm was where the first two people were killed so i look around this campus and there's probably 50 buildings. so will we put 50 police officers, one in each building and is that enough? we have 100,000 institutions and multiply that by the number of buildings if you're talking high schools, you've got kids outside on the football practice thing or the tennis courts or the baseball diamond or the gymnasium. you have how many doors on a good-sized high school, would you be able to guard every door because they can certainly wait while someone comes out one of the other doors and go in. >> another thing with that is if you put an armed guard in an elementar

the nra's position is simply not ten nabl. when you have over 70% of americans, there should be a restriction on guns and, yes, we should have a registry for gun owners and for the nra to say, well, any sort of laws or amendments that you make, you know, it sort of takes away our ability to have guns or, once again, the second amendment, that becomes real problematic. they are not where the majority of americans are. the majority of americans are not where the nra is on this issue. >> erick, let me try this with you and then go back to lou cornell. i guess my point is, when you are looking at this discussion, it's not a discussion at all. everybody has their sort of own area that they want to talk about and no one is discussing, well, maybe we should discuss school safety. and the nra makes this point, when we want the make the president safe, he's surrounded by people with guns. when we want to make money safe at banks, we put men with guns there. so it's not as though it's a foreign concept to protect what is dear to people,
